How Is Bail In California Determined?
Every state has different bail amounts for crimes but for the most part, they are all fairly very similar. For California, a “bail schedule” is used for judges to set and create bail. This bail schedule is reviewed and modified if necessary every year to reflect proper changes with laws. Here are a few examples of the cost of bail in 2014 in the Los Angeles area:
- Minor in possession of alcoholic beverages – $1,000
- Operating a cold storage or refrigerating warehouse without a license – $1,000
- Threaten injury to public official – $15,000
- Fail to disperse from a riot – $5,000
- Sell dogs under 8 weeks of age without documentation for veterinarian – $250
The list is very extensive with many offenses, including some of the above perhaps, that you might not know you can be arrested and fined for! The type of crime committed dictates the amount of bail, as you can see. A more serious crime will result in a higher bail and possibly jail time than less serious crimes.
